Social Responsibility

Check out this amazing video from the group, Watoto From the Nile (Swahili for Children From the Nile).  The girls are sisters and are only 10, 9, and 5 years old.  In the open letter to Lil' Wayne, they call out the rapper for his misogynistic lyrics towards woman.

Memorable lines include:

Mr. Wayne, I must complain/about what you do and what you say

I’m a girl that's only ten/But for my sisters I must represent/How old are you? I hear you're 20-something ... I guess that means that you're a man

My daddy tells me I'm a queen/But you call women other things/It makes me mad/I can't pretend

The song gets disturbing/Please, Mr. Wayne, can you stop all the hurting?

I hear you got a little girl/Does she get the same referral?

I hope that we can work together/and help our people/that's what we need/one love/forget the greed

What an important reminder that the lyrics we as adults might brush off as unimportant, can make a lasting impression on the more vulnerable.  As parents, we try to shield our daughter from all the ugliness in the world.  But I would hope that we can also give Aiyana the strength and guidance so that she will be as thoughtful and wise as these little girls.
